Paddle boarding: where does it come from?
Although the sport is fairly new in the Netherlands, it originated in the 1960s on Waikiki Beach in Hawaii. There are several stories about the origins of paddle boarding. For example, some claim that a paddle board made it easier for fishermen to paddle back from their fishing boat to the harbor and thus invented paddle boarding. Others say that surf teachers used the SUP to give their students instructions and to keep a better overview while standing on their board.
Paddle boarding as a popular sport
In any case, the idea of stand-up paddling really caught on in the early 2000s – surfers in Hawaii could continue exercising this way even when there were few waves. More and more people followed suit, including celebrities. The sport became increasingly popular and there are now even professional competitive suppers!
Get on a paddle board yourself
The nice thing about paddle boarding is that you can learn this basic water sport very quickly. This means that even as a non-experienced athlete you can get started straight away. This makes paddle boarding an ideal activity for group outings, team outings and company outings!
When paddle boarding you have one paddle. This is often adjustable in height so that you can always use it in a way that suits you. With your single paddle you get on the SUP board and enter the water. To get in, you can first sit on your knees. Practice paddling like this and find your balance. Have you found it or do you want to get started ‘for real’ straight away? Then you can stand.
Tips and tricks for your group outing or company outing
Are you going paddle boarding for the first time? Then don’t immediately choose the longest board. The longer and narrower your SUP board is, the more difficult it becomes to stay balanced. Wide, shorter boards give you more support. You can also pay attention to the fins on the bottom. The more fins, the more balance.
Are you generally well balanced and would you like to work on your speed? You can of course also apply the above logic in reverse. Choose the narrower board with fewer fins, so that you have minimal resistance in the water.
What makes paddle boarding as an activity so much fun
During the group paddle boarding activity you enter the water almost immediately. Because little or no experience is enough, you will soon brave the waves of the North Sea. As a bonus, you train all your muscles with paddle boarding. Just think: you have to stay balanced on the board, you use your arms for the paddle and use your whole body to make the best paddling movement. That’s a good workout! Of course, the enthusiastic instructors from Vibe Events are ready to help you and make your outing a great day.
